Abstract: 

A book review is an academic tradition to evaluate the thinkers' contributions to the field of research. It not only improves the reviewer's level of conscious reading, but also evaluates the context in which the book was written to form an opinion on the author's views. Therefore, a good review is more than just a summary of the contents. The present book review aims at describing and evaluating the book entitled “, Research in Language and Linguistics”,(Theoretical and Practical) by Ferdows Aghagolzadeh. In this way, it assesses the strengths and weaknesses of the book without any bias. By asking the question 'what issues of research methodology does the author raise in this book', the article tries to review the form and content of the book based on the descriptive-critical method. In addition to advantages such as observing rules and principles of writing and aligning the content with defined goals of the book, the shortcomings include not using a well-established method in providing the content and not classifying the research types based on purpose, research methods, levels and types of information.

Abstract: 

Contemporary EAP research and teaching academics constantly elaborate new and better methods and re-evaluate those in use to facilitate students’ academic growth. The article considers some options for teaching EAP to undergraduates highlighting the results of the experimental study conducted in the context of higher education in Russia and motivated by the researchers’ perceptions about university level students' difficulties in acquiring proficiency in academic English. The data for this paper comes from 192 undergraduates’ research project proposals. The approach offered is largely in line with traditions of the genre analysis and combines some novel features and conventional elements of the genre, product and process approaches. The innovations imply the use of recurring pattern phrases which are presented as sets of structural templates grouped in genre-based functional categories and organised around the framework of the project proposal.  The article analyses applicability and functionality of this complex methodology developed by the authors relying on criterion-referenced measurement of students’ writing performance by independent raters using analytic rating scales for assessment. The benefits of the methodology under discussion largely pertain to improvement in academic style and text organisation, and a learner-centred approach adopted helps students develop their own models for step-by-step writing project proposals. The findings of this study can have implications for EAP teaching practice in NNS educational settings.

Abstract: 

Mastering writing has always proved an almost insurmountable barrier to EFL learners. In an attempt to alleviate problems advanced EFL learners have with writing, this study aimed at investigating the effect of scaffolded instruction through writing frames constructed from extended prefabricated lexical bundles. 40 female advanced English students, selected out of a population of 65, were randomly assigned into experimental and control groups. The participants of both groups were assigned a writing pre-test prior to any instruction, and a writing post-test following the twenty-session scaffolded instruction in both groups. The results revealed that the participants in the experimental group outperformed their counterparts in the control group as a result of the writing frames they were provided with. Overall, it is concluded that scaffolded instruction through writing frames can be a useful means of helping advanced students to improve their writing quality.

Abstract: 

In order to gain a better understanding and explanation of the issue of research, the quantitative and qualitative data can be mixed. Mixed research strategy is based on mixing these two groups of data. In this article, after reviewing the philosophical basis of mixed research, and quantitative and qualitative strategies, three mixed research proposals: pluralism, explanatory, and discovery are proposed and the main steps in performing mixed research are explicitly provided.

Abstract: 

The Recent development of 2-DOF electrical machines leads to increasing need for 2-DOF position sensors. Using a planar sensor instead of two linear ones decreases the complexity, and cost of the employed drive. Therefore, in this paper a new slotless configuration is proposed for the planar resolver, that simplifies the manufacturing of the sensor. Then, the optimal combination of the stator/mover number of coils is determined based on the proposed analytical model. Finally, to reduce the number of integrated parts of the proposed resolver, a new configuration with skewed coils is proposed. The success of the developed model and the presented configuration is validated using three-dimensional finite element analysis.
